Defense was in short supply Wednesday evening, as the S.L.A.M. Softball combined team of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners/Hart Howerton tacked on 12 runs through one-and-a-half innings en route to a wild 13-8 victory over Gruzen Samton Architects, at Central Park's North Meadow Field 11.

After jumping out of the gate with 5 runs in the first, PCF/HH batted around their lineup in the second, scoring 7 more runs with two outs and taking a dozen-run lead over their opponent. But the Black and Red allowed GSA back into the game with some defensive lapses of their own. By game's end, a darkness-shortened four full innings, 16 players had participated in the win, improving the team's record to 2-1 on the year.

J. Strong, Eron Ashley, and Yusuke Okabayashi led the way with three RBI apiece while Carl Pearson batted a perfect 3-for-3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. In all, the team hit for 7 doubles.

Gruzen Samton attempted a comeback in the bottom of the fourth, which was fueled less by one or two individual player errors as it was by a lack of patience and composure once Gruzen got momentum on their side. With two earlier runs awarded on an overthrow in the second, and a single run in the third, GSA players reached base successfully seven times in the fourth, while adding 5 runs to their total before the game was called at dusk.

Juan Monahan improved to 2-0 on the season, pitching the official 4-inning game.

The team's next game will be on Wednesday, May 14, against Mitchell/Guirgola Architects at the same North Meadow Field 11. Game time is 7 p.m.
